Traffic
Traffic Analysis Background
When we conduct a traffic analysis, we look at what is happening in today's conditions and also analyze projected growth and changes in the area such as population growth, future land uses, and other planned transportation projects.
Today, International Boulevard is the sole roadway providing access to/from the Charleston International Airport (CHS). In addition to serving daily airport traffic, it also serves heavy commuter traffic traveling to/from Boeing and throughout North Charleston via Michaux Parkway and Dorchester Road.
For Airport Connector Road (ACR), we projected what traffic would look like in 2045 if there were no capacity improvements made to International Boulevard. We also quantified how ACR improvements would impact traffic.
Traffic Level of Service (LOS) Map: No-Build
With no improvements to the study area, the combination of airport traffic, commuter traffic, and Boeing traffic is projected to cause the Michaux Parkway and International Boulevard corridors to operate at failing LOS “F.”
Intersections along these corridors are projected to experience high delays, causing significant congestion.
The I-526 interchange ramps at International Boulevard and West Montague Avenue are also anticipated to operate at failing LOS “F” in the afternoon peak hour.
Traffic Level of Service (LOS) Map: Build
The addition of the new ACR provides an alternative route for both airport and commuter traffic, separating this traffic from the traffic traveling to and from Boeing.
This new roadway is anticipated to improve operations of all shown roadways to LOS “C” or better. All shown intersection operations are anticipated to be improved to a LOS “D” or better. The lone exception is in the afternoon peak hour at the intersection of ACR & Michaux Parkway, which is projected to operate at LOS “E.” Traffic will be significantly improved compared to the corresponding International Boulevard corridor in the No-Build option.
The Dorchester Road Improvements project is underway and will address traffic on Dorchester Road.
